Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel might need to brace for a slight shift in plans. While its official Steam store page has finally gone live after a multi-week standstill, administrative friction behind the scenes threatens to push the game’s launch past its targeted midnight UTC release on October 2.
This is far from the first time an entry in the Drillimation Danmaku Universe has run into launch-day turbulence. Long-time followers may recall that the Touhou 1: Highly Responsive to Prayers NES Demake was originally scheduled to drop on January 17, 2020, but was hit with a two-week delay after lead developer Susumu Takajima was unable to complete the build in time. However, unlike that previous development bottleneck, the current hold-up stems entirely from administrative hurdles on Valve’s end.
The turbulence traces back to Valve’s store asset review process. Initially expected to go live two weeks ago, the store page hit a series of review rejections from Steam Support. Valve’s automated and manual asset reviewers flagged the game’s header and capsule graphics for violating asset guidelines regarding extra text—specifically pointing to the Japanese kanji embedded directly within the title’s logo.
According to internal support logs, Steam reviewers repeatedly flagged the Japanese characters as unauthorized “additional text” or promotional copy on English assets, suggesting the developer split the assets or modify the title. The developer countered that the kanji form a core, non-promotional part of the official logo—a stylistic staple present in previous entries like Mythos of Phantasmagoria, Song of Divine Tempest, and Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity.
The issue was ultimately resolved after the developer updated the store page’s registered English title to explicitly include the kanji characters—Touhou Meishuugeki (東方明秋劇) ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel—prompting Steam Support to approve the store page assets.
However, the back-and-forth created a significant bottleneck:
- Extended Review Windows: Store page reviews stretched to roughly four business days per submission—double the standard two-day turn-around time—drastically slowing down resolution.
- Oct. 2 Launch Impact: Due to the chain of approval delays, the game’s launch on Steam is expected to be pushed back by several hours from its planned midnight UTC release on October 2 to allow for final build verification.
- Alternative Platforms: The delay is isolated strictly to Steam; the planned itch.io release remains completely unaffected and on schedule.
With the store page officially cleared and public, players can now wishlist the title ahead of its adjusted release window on October 2.
