The peak of summer has drawn to a close and August has rolled in. Once again unfortunately, everyone in the Northern Hemisphere is finding themselves facing that familiar, bittersweet shift in seasons. The endless summer nights of late-night gaming sessions, marathon co-op multiplayer parties, and grinding levels are winding down. If you’re a student, get ready for the inevitable return to alarm clocks, heavy backpacks, and school hallways.
While bidding farewell to a summer break is never easy for any person in school, heading back brings its own kind of excitement: reuniting with your squad. Beyond having to put up with textbooks, boring lectures, and hours-long homework, going back to campus means catching up with your friends in person, comparing your summer gaming achievements, trade setups, and planning your next gaming sessions around your assignment schedules. This transition marks a fresh start, proving that even as summer ends, the multiplayer experience is just getting started.
So, as we gear up for a busy autumn ahead, there’s plenty of exciting news, major updates, and fresh project highlights to dive into. From game updates to behind-the-scenes progress, including not one, but two major releases that recently took place, we have a lot to cover.
Key Developments
Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality Releases on Steam
Over a week ago, the Chuhou Joutai series made its return with the first original installment in nearly four years. We are thrilled to announce that Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality is out now on both Steam and itch.io.
Fusing classic block-breaking mechanics with intense danmaku action, this dreamlike prequel takes place twenty years before Chuhou Joutai: The Middle State of War. Players follow Tomohiro Uchida and shrine maiden Hikari Aogami as they harness the power of the Yin-Yang Orb to shatter spellbinding bullet walls across 300 stages and 15 boss battles.
Key Features:
- Classic Arcade Meets Danmaku: A spiritual successor to our Touhou 1: The Highly Responsive to Prayers NES Demake, combining brick-breaker precision with bullet-hell pattern dodging.
- Co-Op Multiplayer: Local drop-in/drop-out co-op support so you and a friend can tackle the campaign together.
- Built-in Stage Editor: Full custom stage creation tools to build and play your own layouts.
- Accessibility Options: Complete controller/keyboard support, customizable difficulty, custom audio controls, and save-anywhere functionality.
Originally conceived in 2020 under the working title White Javelin, the project was revived as a solo effort in May 2025 following the disastrous launch of Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity. Following a five-month development sprint and thorough beta testing with co-developer E. Enthusiasm, the game is finally in your hands. Grab your copy today and dive into the dream realm!
Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel Enters Open Beta

Two days ago, and after six months of active development, our upcoming manic shooter Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel has officially transitioned into its final post-production phase with the launch of our feature-packed Open Beta!
In this Touhou Project fangame, players investigate a mysterious curse through intense, pattern-heavy danmaku gameplay. Windows and macOS players can download and test the latest build right now on itch.io.
What’s New in the Beta?
- Phantasm Stage and Boss Fight: A brand-new end-game stage featuring an intense boss encounter.
- Multiplayer Mode: Team up with a friend to tackle the bullet-hell action together.
- Replay System: Save and review full playthroughs or individual stage runs.
Developer Note on Replays: Building the new Replay System required a massive overhaul of the game’s core logic to fix synchronization issues between movement physics and graphics. As a result, you might encounter minor quirks in enemy behaviors, item drops, or boss patterns. If you spot any bugs, please report them on our GitHub repository! Additionally, full playthrough replays can reach over 3MB, and double that amount if you played multiplayer, so expect a brief loading pause when loading replays.
The Open Beta is available under a “Name Your Own Price” model on itch.io. Grab the game, test out the multiplayer and replay features, and let us know what you think!

A massive thank you to everyone who has followed, reposted, and engaged with our posts over on the platform. Instagram/Threads

After a long period of stagnant discoverability following platform-wide algorithm changes, our Instagram page has officially sparked a major turnaround! By pivoting our content strategy toward short-form video through Instagram Reels, we’ve successfully broken our long-standing engagement drought.
The first reel, which was a breakdown of a hidden Touhou Project easter egg in GameMaker’s documentation and a showcase of our custom “Royal Makeovers” for iconic characters, have driven a massive surge in reach. The Royal Makeovers reel alone racked up over 600 likes and 5,000 views, marking the highest engagement on a single post in our studio’s history and bringing in dozens of new followers. It was the most popular one, until a reel explaining my Touhou Project listening list really took off.
Short-form video content has proven to be the key to reaching our community again, and we are excited to keep leveraging Reels and YouTube Shorts to share more devlogs, character reveals, and behind-the-scenes content moving forward.
YouTube
Mirroring our success on Instagram, pivoting our YouTube content strategy toward YouTube Shorts has triggered a massive breakthrough in our channel’s reach and audience engagement.
In the past, our monthly viewership hovered consistently in the low thousands. However, since integrating Shorts into our regular uploading schedule, our monthly channel reach has exploded into the tens of thousands. Short-form previews—ranging from project teasers like our recent Pawing across the windowsill showcase to quick devlogs and character highlights—have proven to be an incredibly effective gateway for bringing new viewers and subscribers into the Drillimation community.
Moving forward, YouTube Shorts will remain a core pillar of our video strategy alongside our traditional long-form trailers and dev updates!
Over the past two months, the subscriber count increased by 50 for a total of 1,187 today.
Future Goals
New Site and Profile Icon

Every August, we unveil a new profile icon as a creative tradition to showcase our ever-evolving art style and highlight how our visual design has matured over the past year.
This year’s avatar features a clean, high-contrast digital illustration with sharper linework, dynamic lighting, and our signature vibrant red color palette. Beyond serving as our updated profile picture across all social platforms, this refreshed artwork will also be rolling out across our official website header and branding assets to give our entire digital presence a sharp, unified look for the upcoming year – until the next August.

Getting ready for Touhou Meishuugeki‘s Leap to Steam
With Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel currently undergoing rigorous testing in Open Beta on itch.io, our primary focus is shifting toward preparing the game for its grand debut on Steam.
Transitioning from a standalone beta build to a full Steam release involves much more than simply uploading the final executable. Over the coming months, we will be hard at work integrating native Steamworks features. Since it is a freeware title, we won’t be implementing achievements like what we did for Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest and Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity. The only functionality will be to take screenshots. Additionally, we are using valuable gameplay data and bug reports from the Open Beta to fine-tune bullet patterns, polish the newly implemented Replay System, and optimize overall performance on both Windows and macOS.
Mark your calendars: the full version of Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel is officially scheduled to release on October 2, 2026—dropping just in time for Cleveland Anime Fest! Whether you plan to pick up the game on Steam or visit us at the convention, we can’t wait for you to experience the complete journey. Stay tuned for further updates as we draw closer to launch day!
Prototyping a New Project

The concept for this project first began taking shape late last year. After discovering that a game I fondly remembered from my youth was featured on Wikipedia’s front page, I was inspired to compose cover soundtracks for Bejeweled’s 25th anniversary earlier this year – marking my return to FamiTracker remixes after a long hiatus. Looking back, I decided to search for my own twist on the match-three genre and settled on “pushing” as the core mechanic, drawing additional inspiration from the Block Star mini-game in Mario Party 6. The final title for the project takes its cue directly from that mini-game: Blockstar.
While I won’t go into the characters or setting in detail, I can give you an idea of the premise in the style of a TV Tropes Laconic entry. A youkai-born exchange student and a group of girls start a visual kei band to save their school’s idol club and conquer the music charts, while fighting off evil and rivals on the side. This will be the third Drillimation Danmaku Universe game to mention “visual kei” in some form – first with Kiyomi Tatariya in Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity, second with the Grieg twins in Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel, and this title. I didn’t take the visual kei idea from Hosokawa-san or Ciel Chandelleur – it was from the game’s title. To break down the name, Blockstar is a portmanteau of “block” and “rockstar”, and the pronunciation is a pun on the latter word.
As summer comes to an end and autumn approaches, we couldn’t be more excited for what’s in store for the rest of the year. Between the launch of Shining Shattering Sky, the ongoing Open Beta for Touhou Meishuugeki, and early work on Blockstar, there is plenty of momentum carrying us into the fall season.
Thank you all once again for your incredible support across Twitter, Bluesky, Instagram, and YouTube. Reaching these new community milestones alongside major release dates makes all the hard work worth it.
Be sure to grab your copies on Steam and itch.io, leave us your feedback, and stay tuned for more dev updates as we head toward our October launch! See you in the next digest in September!
