Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality Releases on Steam

The Chuhou Joutai series returns with a brand new original block-breaker prequel – the first new installment in nearly four years.

Drillimation Systems has officially launched its latest title, Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality, on Steam. Departing from its recent adaptational releases, the studio’s new original entry fuses classic brick-breaking action with danmaku intensity.

A Dreamlike Prequel to Chuhou Joutai

Set twenty years before the events of Chuhou Joutai: The Middle State of War (and six years before the birth of series protagonist Kumiko Uchida), Shining Shattering Sky transports players into a surreal dream realm.

Players take control of Tomohiro Uchida, a young man studying to become a shrine priest, and Hikari Aogami, a shrine maiden assisting him in his training. Armed with the mystical power of the Yin-Yang Orb, the duo must shatter walls of mesmerizing bullet patterns and fend off nightmare-inducing adversaries across an imaginary landscape.

“When you need a break from your everyday life, take a peek into the dreams of Tomohiro Uchida and Hikari Aogami… In order to survive in this world, you are armed with the power of the Yin-Yang Orb, which Hikari will help you channel.”

Core Gameplay Features and Mechanics

Serving as a spiritual successor to Drillimation’s acclaimed Touhou 1: The Highly Responsive to Prayers NES Demake, Shining Shattering Sky builds upon retro arcade foundations with modern features:

  • 300 Stages & 15 Boss Battles: A massive campaign featuring dense wall layouts, hidden surprises, and formidable boss encounters.
  • Co-Op Multiplayer: Supports local drop-in/drop-out co-op play, allowing two players to team up using dual controllers.
  • Built-in Level Editor: Includes a comprehensive stage creation tool, allowing players to design and play custom block layouts.
  • Accessibility Options: Features adjustable difficulty settings, keyboard and controller support, save-anywhere functionality, and custom audio controls.

Development History: From ‘White Javelin‘ to Release

The road to release for Shining Shattering Sky spans several years of internal iteration and studio restructuring. The project originally began in late 2020 under the working title “White Javelin” as a straightforward Arkanoid clone before being shelved so Drillimation could focus on other projects, including its collaborations with Studio Emiko (Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest and Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity).

However, following the disastrous critical reception of Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity last spring and a series of operational disruptions, a major rift formed between Drillimation Systems and Studio Emiko. The resulting feud led to Studio Emiko officially withdrawing from all future Drillimation projects to focus on other ventures, particularly their Ciel Chandelleur VTuber project.

Without Studio Emiko’s involvement—and with the studio missing from the final game’s copyright notice—Drillimation revived the long-dormant concept in May 2025 as a solo effort to regain its creative footing. Reworking the mechanics into a 16-bit block-breaking danmaku hybrid, Drillimation Systems once again partnered with co-developer E. Enthusiasm to push the game through a five-month development sprint, alpha testing, and open beta playtests, culminating in its official release.

Reception and Final Thoughts

Developer reception following the launch has already highlighted the title’s balance between accessibility and depth. Reflecting on the final build via the Drillimation Discord server, co-developer E. Enthusiasm praised the game’s approachable design while noting its surprising length across the campaign’s “three dreams”:

“It took me several months, but I finally got around to beating all three dreams (for the longest time I only played the first)—I have the save file to prove it too if you need it. This is probably the Drillimation Danmaku Universe game that best benefits from the series’ whole focus on being accessible to casual players, but at the same time, I can tell it wasn’t designed to be gone through in like a couple days like I did.”

Whether you are a seasoned danmaku veteran looking to test your reaction time or a newcomer searching for an approachable retro arcade experience, Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality offers a robust, feature-packed return to form for the Chuhou Joutai universe.

Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality is available now on Steam and itch.io.
