Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel Finally Launches on Steam

Gensokyo is facing a new kind of crisis, and it isn’t just about flying bullets—it’s about isolation.

After months of anticipation, community updates, and steady engine overhauls, Drillimation Systems has officially launched Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel on Steam. Marking the fourteenth installment in the long-running Drillimation Danmaku Universe and serving as the grand finale to Phase Two, this latest entry aims to refine the studio’s traditional manic shooter formula while delivering a darker, more personal storyline.

To celebrate the digital debut, Drillimation is staging the game’s world premiere at the Cleveland Anime Fest tomorrow, giving fans a chance to experience the full release on the show floor alongside its Steam launch.

At the center of Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel lies “glohm”—a sinister, aura-emitting substance manufactured by the secretive Gensokyo Socialite Order. Designed to manipulate humanoids and youkai into seeking total isolation from society, glohm claims its first victim in Fusana Midorigawa, a maid residing in a mansion near Yumemura. When her partner Hiroyuki Shirogane escapes the outbreak to warn Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden sets out to uncover the Order’s scheme and put an end to the spreading infection.

Players can expect a heavily upgraded experience built on a brand-new, Danmakufu-inspired engine. Featuring four distinct playable heroines, overhauled visual design, rebalanced health systems, and the series-first introduction of deathbombing and dedicated replay recording, Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel stands as a pivotal entry for veteran danmaku enthusiasts and series newcomers alike.

Gameplay

At its core, Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel delivers the classic, intense bullet-hell experience fans expect from the Drillimation Danmaku Universe. Players navigate dense patterns of stage hazards and boss encounters across traditional vertically and horizontally scrolling sequences, weaving through complex bullet curtains while managing character-specific attack styles.

Refined Mechanics & Modern Overhauls

Built on a completely overhauled, Danmakufu-inspired engine, the gameplay makes several significant departures from its predecessor, Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity:

  • Separated Health and Lives Systems: Player survivability has been completely restructured. Instead of losing a life instantly upon taking damage, players now possess individual health gauges. A life is only lost when the active health bar is fully depleted, giving players a critical buffer during high-density bullet patterns.
  • Series-First Deathbombing: Introducing a long-awaited staple to Drillimation’s formula, players can now perform a “deathbomb.” If hit while holding extra bomb inventory, triggering the bomb button within a split-second window after taking fatal damage sacrifices a bomb to avert death. However, this safety net is disabled when on your last remaining life.
  • Dynamic Time Progression: Borrowing inspiration from classic entries like Touhou 8: Imperishable Night, time advances dynamically depending on overall player performance, adding tactical depth and score-chasing incentives throughout each run.
  • Dedicated Replay Recording: Players can now record, save, and review their input replays natively to analyze movement strategies, practice tricky bosses, or showcase high-score achievements.

Roster and Spell Cards

The game features four distinct playable heroines, each equipped with unique shot types and scenario routes:

  • Reimu Hakurei — The iconic shrine maiden investigating the glohm outbreak, and the Chief Justice of the Federal Kingdom of Gensokyo.
  • Marisa Kirisame — A once lowly magician who has taken the throne as Queen of the Federal Kingdom of Gensokyo, and the one hosting the Autumn Equinox Festival.
  • Yukari Yakumo — A legendary youkai-born sage who is the Queen of the Democratic Kingdom of Gensokyo. She was one of two foreign delegates invited to the festival.
  • Kaguya Houraisan — A former princess from the Lunar Capital who is now the Empress of the People’s Kingdom of Gensokyo. She was the second foreign delegate invited to the festival.

Across the main story stages, Extra Stage, and Phantasm Stage, players will face off against an aggressive gauntlet featuring a total of 75 unique spell cards, demanding quick reflexes, precise bomb usage, and strict pattern recognition to master.

Story

The narrative of Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel unfolds across a structured, multi-part arc—beginning with a dramatic introduction, proceeding through the daytime Cursed Sweeper episode and the Extra Stage, and escalating into the nighttime Bewildering Parallel episode before culminating in the series-first Phantasm Stage.

Prologue & Incident Outbreak

Set nine months after the events of Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria, Queen Marisa Kirisame prepares to host the inaugural Autumn Equinox Festival for the newly established Federal Kingdom of Gensokyo. Foreign delegates Yukari Yakumo and Kaguya Houraisan arrive in Kozankyo to join the festivities alongside Reimu Hakurei.

However, the peaceful gathering is abruptly interrupted when the secretive Gensokyo Socialite Order releases “glohm”—a sinister, aura-emitting substance engineered to force its victims into total social isolation. The first reported outbreak occurs at a mansion near Yumemura, where maid Fusana Midorigawa falls under the glohm’s influence. Her partner, Hiroyuki Shirogane, escapes to the Hakurei Shrine to sound the alarm, prompting Reimu and her companions to mobilize.

Cursed Sweeper Episode (Daytime)

During the daytime Cursed Sweeper route, the four heroines set out across Gensokyo to trace the glohm back to its source. As they battle through infected youkai and members of the Socialite Order, they uncover the Order’s broader scheme: to destabilize the newly formed kingdoms by sowing distrust and isolating key leaders.

Extra Stage

Serving as a bridge between the primary narrative chapters, the Extra Stage delves deeper into the aftermath of the daytime incident. The heroines confront lingering Order operatives and high-ranking midbosses—including Elite Four member Koakuma—to purge residual glohm pockets hidden around Mayohiga and solidify the perimeter before nightfalls.

Bewildering Parallel Episode (Nighttime)

As night descends upon Gensokyo, the true threat materializes in the Bewildering Parallel episode. The Socialite Order launches a second, far more aggressive glohm wave under cover of darkness, re-infecting Fusana into a heightened form and attempting to engulf the Autumn Equinox Festival in complete isolation. The nighttime route features altered stage layouts, escalated boss patterns, and deeper narrative revelations regarding Fusana’s Lunarian heritage and the Order’s ultimate motives.

Phantasm Stage

Marking a historic first for a Drillimation title, the game includes a dedicated Phantasm Stage that serves as the definitive epilogue to both the game and Phase Two of the Drillimation Danmaku Universe. Unlocked after mastering both primary episodes, this final gauntlet features the game’s highest pattern density.

Music

Audio in Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel receives a massive technical and stylistic overhaul. The game uses the FMOD sound engine for dynamic music playback and seamless audio looping, while GameMaker Studio 2’s native audio system handles standard sound effects.

To match the darker, high-stakes tone of the narrative, the soundtrack leans heavily into heavy metal and hard rock influences. Most notably, all boss themes are composed in the metal genre, deliberately styled to evoke a dramatic visual kei aesthetic—a concept spearheaded by the Grieg twins.

The game’s expansive tracklist combines brand-new compositions with historical tracks spanning Drillimation’s developmental timeline:

  • Archival Origins: The title screen theme is derived from an unreleased, canceled Emiverse project dating back nearly four years. Another track is pulled directly from Chuhou Joutai 2: Paraided!.
  • Hifuu Album Imports: Multiple stage and character themes originate from Drillimation’s Hifuu album series, including tracks from Marvelous Faceless Reflection (released in December 2025) and Cold Frontal Lobotomy (released in June 2026).
  • Cross-Series Retainers: Three tracks are carried over directly from Touhou Kichouden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria 2.
  • Official Touhou Arrangements: Rounding out the score are two new arrangements of classic ZUN compositions from the official Touhou Project series.

Development

Pre-production on Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel began in late 2025 as Drillimation Systems was wrapping up work on Shining Shattering Sky ~ Reverie of Breaking Unreality. Following the disastrous launch and critical reception of Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity earlier that year, director Susumu Takajima conceived the project as an explicit attempt to rebound and restore the studio’s standing with the danmaku community.

Takajima drew primary narrative inspiration after playing through Mario & Luigi: Brothership, adapting its core concept of “glohm” as the driving incident behind Gensokyo’s isolation crisis. An early, discarded plot pitch originally involved the player characters in the final hours of their pregnancies; however, scenario consultant Emiko Hosokawa suggested scrapping the concept to avoid triggering further comparisons to Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity.

Formal development commenced in November 2025, with the first three months dedicated exclusively to building a brand-new, Danmakufu-inspired engine from scratch to allow for tighter hitboxes, complex bullet patterning, and horizontal scrolling support. Active game creation began in late January 2026. To demonstrate the new engine, a prototype was assembled in just one week and debuted on the show floor at the Pittsburgh Anime Fest in February 2026, followed by another playable appearance at the Niagara Falls Anime Fest in March.

Drillimation maintained a rapid release schedule throughout its six-month production cycle:

  • March 20, 2026: Public Alpha release featuring the first three daytime stages.
  • May 2026: Addition of the remaining daytime story stages.
  • June 2026: Launch of the Extra Stage.
  • July 30, 2026: Beta release introducing the nighttime Bewildering Parallel episode and the series-first Phantasm Stage.

Valve Review and Release Delay

While production concluded smoothly in July, the game’s commercial launch encountered unexpected friction on Valve’s end. Scheduled for an October 1, 2026 launch at 8:00 PM EDT (intended to align with a midnight UTC debut on October 2), the Steam release was delayed by several hours after Valve flagged the game’s capsule art and store assets. Valve claimed that the embedded Japanese kanji in the official logo constituted unauthorized “additional text” or promotional copy on English assets.

To resolve the dispute without redesigning the artwork, Drillimation updated its registered English title on the storefront to Touhou Meishuugeki (東方明秋劇) ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel. Steam Support approved the changes following two weeks of review, allowing the game to launch alongside its showcase at the Cleveland Anime Fest.

Where to Get the Game

Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel is available as a free-to-play title across digital PC platforms, as well as live show floor installations:
