Why the Prophet Driller is Putting Out So Much PC-98 Touhou-style art (and music)

A completed full body with the correct proportions.

Chuhou Joutai 2: Paraided! is meant to be based on the PC-98 Touhou Project games based on its musical score, but not the art direction. Why?

The game used pre-rendered graphics created using VRoid Studio and converted to 2D art in Adobe Illustrator and Paint.NET. Paint.NET, for the most part, is used for all pixel art-related jobs. More recently, we’ve been putting out art mocking the PC-98 Touhou Project art direction. This started off as an experiment to see what Kagami Ochiai, a playable character from the Chuhou Joutai series, might’ve looked like in ZUN’s style at that time. After getting a lot of upvotes on Reddit, we continued the series by producing a number of other pieces of art including characters wearing unusual outfits.

We’ve also been uploading a number of PC-98 style tunes that we made in BambooTracker, a freeware music tracker emulating the YM-2608 chip. In fact, BambooTracker is what was used to compose the soundtrack for Chuhou Joutai 2: Paraided!. We started doing this as a way to get more views on the Drillimation Systems YouTube channel.

What do you think is going to happen next? Will this art direction be used in the next major project by Drillimation Systems? Try guessing!

  1. You’re so cool! I don’t believe I’ve truly read through anything like that before. So wonderful to find someone with unique thoughts on this subject matter. Really.. thank you for starting this up. This website is something that’s needed on the internet, someone with some originality!
