Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria – One Year Later

Last Saturday marked the first anniversary of the release of Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria, and the start of the Chuhou Joutai origin story. The history of the game’s development goes as far back as early 2021 during the development of Chuhou Joutai 2: Paraided! when the game’s concept was originally conceived. After a year and a half of preproduction, development of the game finally started after Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess wrapped up development.

Development on the whole game lasted a year – eleven months to be exact. Its sequel, Touhou Kichouden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria 2, was supposed to begin development right after the first game in the summer of 2023, but ended up getting postponed as Drillimation needed to create a filler game to recharge. Development on Mythos of Phantasmagoria 2 wouldn’t begin until a month after Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest released.

Our role-playing entries typically need at least two years of development – one for development and the other for post-production. This is because of the large amount of resources needed, and one of them is the enemies. The ideas for the monsters that players encounter come from the childhood experiences of those who work on it, including from the movies and TV shows they’ve watched, books and manga they’ve read, scary experiences including nightmares, and so forth.

This anniversary showed that the Chuhou Joutai timeline has gone back in time, and Drillimation’s next project will be another canon entry set in between the events of those two series. Even though the beta of its sequel is already out, we are anticipating the official release of the game this September.
