State of Drillimation: Spring 2023

Ever since 2023 rolled in, significant developments for not just Touhou Kourinden but Drillimation’s other projects were made. Touhou Kourinden‘s development is going smoothly, and the fifth act is almost complete. The full game may be complete by the end of April or early May. Even if you think the game would be done by that point, it’s never done as there’s post-game content that has to be made in order for the game to be successful. The game will not end after the final boss, but will truly after the post-game stuff.

Touhou Kourinden After it Enters the Post-Production Phase

After that, the game will enter its post-production phase. We’ll be busy looking for playtesters to QA test the whole game and check for bugs that I may have left behind. Who knows? Are there some things that must be finetuned so that it can fit within Whitethorn Digital’s philosophy? Only you can answer that question.

Touhou Kourinden is intended to soothe players intimidated by the danmaku genre and provide an environment of what danmaku RPGs for beginners are supposed to be. The game is intended to have a fast learning curve so that you can learn all of the basic rules of the game without having to read the manual, though an in-game manual will be included.

This is not an announcement of some kind. Touhou Kourinden is not projected to release until next summer. We have spent most of our time creating music content for this channel so we can get some views. Having to do this twice a week is hectic. Some of them have nonetheless been awesome and have been getting a lot of praise.

New Project in Pre-Production

We will still be making games after Touhou Kourinden completes development. We have a brand new title in pre-production, and this will be a joint collaboration with the Vietnam-based Studio Emiko.

The Prophet Driller will not be taking the director’s chair. All previous games developed by Drillimation were directed by him. This new game will be based on a screenplay by Emiko Hosokawa, Studio Emiko’s chairwoman. This game will also mark the first Drillimation game directed by a woman. Formal development won’t begin until the second half of this year. The soundtrack is already complete.

Will a New Chuhou Joutai Game be Made Within the Next Two Years?

Unfortunately, not at this moment. We’re glad you asked likely because you enjoyed one of the three games. The reason we’re not planning to make a new Chuhou Joutai is because at the moment we are pouring our resources into Touhou Kourinden. A large majority of Chuhou Joutai‘s mythology and lore will be found in Touhou Kourinden. Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess was considered the grand finale. The whole trilogy took four years to make.

Will You Continue the Touhou Project Demakes Saga with an Adaptation of Touhou 6: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil?

Again, no. Both the Touhou Project NES Demakes and the Chuhou Joutai trilogy were developed concurrently. The demakes took two and a half years to make. Both sagas were made before Touhou Kourinden, and that game started development a few days before the demo of Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess released. We can’t begin demakes of the first entire Windows era of Touhou Project and possibly do another Chuhou Joutai trilogy at the same time.

This is why we are developing a new game with Studio Emiko. This new game will be a test for the Driller Engine System 2 featuring Super Nintendo-style graphics. As of now, we want to make an RPG. That’s our focus. That RPG might get a sequel after the Studio Emiko project, forcing us back into the restrictions of our current project.

That’s It.

We also recommend you watch the State of the Prophet Driller video for the second quarter of 2023:

We hope you are enjoying your spring.
