Houseplants do make your home look beautiful. Every day, you walk around your garden or home perimeter, marveling at all the lush green, until you stumble across a shriveled, dead brown stick in a pot.
Why is keeping a handful of leaves alive harder than raising a child!? You buy a plant because you think, “Hey, this will add a nice touch of nature to my room!” But no! The second you set it down, you’ve signed up for an endless, unrewarding job.
If you water them inside, the water leaks out of those tiny holes in the bottom of the pot, straight onto your wooden table, leaving a nice, permanent white ring! If you put a saucer underneath, it just overflows anyway.
And outside!? Outside is even worse! You drag a heavy, tangled garden hose across the yard, spraying yourself in the process, only for half the water to evaporate in the sun before it even hits the dirt. The rain does it for free! Why do I have to stand here like an idiot holding a piece of plastic for twenty minutes!?
And God forbid you forget to water them for one single day. You go on a weekend trip or just get busy with life, and you come back to a tragic botanical graveyard. The leaves are crispy, brown, and crumbling like potato chips!
You look at it and go, “Oh, sorry buddy, let me get you some water!” But it’s already too late! The soil gets so dry that it shrinks into a solid brick, so when you finally water it, the water doesn’t even soak in—it just slides right down the sides of the pot and dumps onto your floor!
So then you try to be responsible. You say, “Okay, I won’t forget! I’ll keep it super hydrated!” Big mistake!
Overwatering kills plants just as fast as under-watering! If you give it slightly too much water, the roots literally drown and rot! How does that make any sense?! You’re dying of thirst one minute, and suffocating the next! What kind of fragile, picky design is that!? They drop their leaves if they’re thirsty, and they turn yellow and drop their leaves if they’re full! Pick a lane!
And don’t even get me started on the “solutions.” You look online for automatic watering tools, like those glass globes or drip-irrigation spikes. They promise hands-free watering!
But read the fine print: “Keeps plants watered for up to two weeks!”
Two weeks!? That’s it!? What if I’m gone longer? And half the time, these things don’t even work! Either the soil clogs the tiny hole instantly so no water comes out at all, or the entire globe dumps all its water into the pot within ten seconds, drowning the plant instantly! You went from automatic watering to an automatic assassination device!
And even if you manage to strike the impossible balance of moisture, sunlight, and humidity, guess what shows up out of nowhere? Bugs!
Where do fungus gnats even come from?! You’re sitting at your computer, and suddenly a tiny black speck is hovering two inches from your face. You kill it, and five more appear! You didn’t import a tropical jungle—you bought a peace lily from Home Depot, and now your house is the breeding ground for a million microscopic flies! Spider mites, mealybugs, aphids… they just manifest out of thin air like video game enemies!
You gotta water them, but not too much, not too little, watch out for the leaks, buy a globe that empties in five minutes, and fight off an army of fruit flies! Just get a plastic plant with fake leaves instead! It stays green forever, it doesn’t need a single drop of water, and it won’t attract an infestation!
Watering plants… is BS.

Maybe try outdoor plants? But yeah, I totally get it. The struggle is real.

New Mexico is a land of Enchantment and perpetual drought with landscapes of sand, gravel and every size of rock. When it does rain, even hard, there is never a trace of mud. Indoor plants are plastic, silk if you are wealthy.
