Drillimation Releases Alpha For Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel

This past Friday, Drillimation Systems released the alpha build for its latest fangame, Touhou Meishuugeki ~ Cursed Sweeper and Bewildering Parallel. The game offers an enticing glimpse into a new standalone canon entry to the Drillimation Danmaku Universe. The alpha is now available for download via itch.io, and this early build shows that the Prophet Driller is confident enough to take bold strides in new directions while retaining the core tenets of danmaku.

Set in Kozankyo in the Federal Kingdom of Gensokyo several months after its establishment and during the autumn, the game plunges players into the origins of a mysterious new curse known as “glohm.” This toxic substance infects both humanoids and youkai-borns, shutting their hearts and forcing them into a state of isolated hostility. The narrative follows series staples like Reimu Hakurei as they investigate the source of this curse that will turn your friends into enemies, promising a darker and more focused plot than some of its lighter predecessors. It’s a classic Touhou setup, but with a unique and slightly grittier spin.

Perhaps the most immediately striking aspect of this alpha release is the bold new art direction. Drillimation has seemingly drawn inspiration from the charming pixel art of games like Stardew Valley, resulting in detailed, characterful tiles and sprites that offer a distinct visual shift from earlier Drillimation titles. This refresh extends beyond the visuals: the game is built on a completely overhauled engine designed to deliver a more authentic, polished danmaku experience, reminiscent of games developed with the popular Danmakufu tool.

As is to be expected from an alpha build, the current release offers a trial version-style preview of the game. Players can dive into the first three stages and face off against four formidable bosses. It introduces new characters such as the clumsy tengu mail courier Kotori Tegami. Notably, the third stage introduces horizontal scrolling segments, a new feature for the scrolling shooter games of the Drillimation Danmaku Universe, hinting at more dynamic stage designs in the future.

Currently, only Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame are playable, with fan-favorites Yukari Yakumo and Kaguya Houraisan slated for future updates. The alpha is also open source, with the GitHub repository accessible for those curious to peek under the hood or GameMaker developers wishing to help improve the game.

The development of the game began in late 2025 as a direct response to the disastrous launch of Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity last year. Drillimation has positioned this project as a necessary rebound, focusing heavily on engine refinement and a compelling new artistic vision. While the alpha represents only the first entire quarter of the game, the developers are aiming for a full release in late 2026 with an October launch date on both Steam and itch.io. If this early preview is any indication, Touhou Project players have a fresh look at an exciting title to look forward to later this year.

Based on player feedback, the new engine feels remarkably tight and responsive, providing the smooth danmaku action that most players expect. It features new, visually impressive, and tactically diverse spell cards. The Stardew Valley-esque pixel art adds a unique charm to the stages, and the inclusion of horizontal scrolling introduces a welcome layer of complexity to the classic Drillimation Danmaku Universe formula. While only a small taste of what is to come, this alpha demonstrates that Drillimation is on the right track to delivering a high-quality fangame experience.

The game is available now on both Windows and macOS and can be checked out on itch.io here:
