The Outside World Families That Moved to Gensokyo

In the Land of Illusions, the two most dominant ethnic group is the humanoids, regardless of ethnicity, and youkai-borns, which are Gensokyo’s indigenous people. In terms of racial makeup, the majority of humanoids are ethnic Japanese. Before Swedish colonization of the Gensokyo continent began, ethnic Japanese humanoids and the youkai-borns made up nearly 100 percent of the population. Once colonization began, many people from Europe began to flood the continent. There were some outsiders who left their home country for Gensokyo before colonization. Let’s take a look at a few:

  • The locations where the Probability Space Hypervessel’s origin is unknown, and nobody knows the birthplace of Yumemi Okazaki or Chiyuri Kitashirakawa. It’s not clear if they were born in Tokugawa Japan and defected from the shogunate.
  • Vladrouge Scarlet was not actually born in Gensokyo, but rather in France to Romanian heritage. His wife, Camille Kilburne, was born nearby in England. Both of them moved to Gensokyo once they attained the age of 10, and both met in Gensokyo while they were 13, and together they would found the Gensokyo Socialite Order – the most infamous organization in Gensokyo’s history. The Scarlet Devil Mansion was built not too long thereafter.
  • Little is known about the Prismriver family. Based on information and belief, their surname was also written as Nijikawa, implying they may have defected from the Tokugawa shogunate and changed their surname to Prismriver, and the Ruined Western Mansion was constructed upon their arrival. The Prismriver sisters ended up marrying husbands of European descent, and their descendants have done so since then for their spouses.
  • Sanae Kochiya, along with Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya, were all born in Suwa, located in Nagano Prefecture in Japan. When they were close to adulthood, declining faith in her gave them the motivation to move, and Gensokyo was the destination when a youkai-born man who was visiting Gensokyo at the time offered to get them across the Great Hakurei Divide and into Gensokyo, where a new Moriya Shrine was constructed.
  • Miko Toyosatomimi is also native to Japan, and when she defected to Gensokyo, the Hall of Dreams Great Mausoleum was constructed near the Myouren Temple. She was one of the forces that popularized Taoism, along with Confucianism in Gensokyo.

  1. This is a fascinating and richly detailed exploration of Gensokyo’s demographics and history. The way you weave together migration patterns, cultural origins, and family lineages gives a vivid sense of depth and realism to the world. I particularly appreciate how you contextualize the interplay between humanoids and youkai-borns, while also tracing individual backstories that highlight the influence of both Japanese and European heritage. It reads like a well-researched historical account within a fantastical setting—engaging, informative, and immersive.
