Windows 10 Has Been Discontinued – A Look Back and Memories

A decade ago, the world got treated to a brand new operating system by Microsoft – Windows 10. Every time a new Windows version releases, you have to believe me, it will become the most-used operating system within a matter of a few years. Back in the day, operating systems released every three to five years. Nowadays, we may be getting treated to a six-year cycle. I mostly got my use of Windows 10 through high school. Back when it first came out, I was still using an Acer tower that was several years old and ran Windows 7. I can’t believe the hard drive managed to survive for several years. I didn’t start using Windows 10 until 2018 when I got a Dell G7 laptop as a graduation present for finishing high school, and to conquer the mighty task of developing the original Chuhou Joutai.

I went on to use Windows 10 for several years, until the end of 2023, when I upgraded my previous tower to Windows 11 in order to stay up to date, and that’s the current operating system I’m using right now. When I upgraded and left Windows 10 behind, I had to think and look back at everything I’ve done. The first game I developed in the Windows 10 environment was the first Chuhou Joutai, and the last was Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest. That was incidentally ten games that I made from the summer of 2018 to the 2023 holiday season, spanning five years with an average of two games produced per year.

I have so many memories with the operating systems I’ve used over the years. The first one I used was Windows 3.1 on an old Compaq Presario that my maternal grandparents owned, then Windows 95 on an IBM Aptiva owned by my parents, then Windows 98 on an old Gateway PC that my father’s previous workplace gave him. Multiple devices in my family ran Windows XP, including my father’s old Gateway laptop, an Acer Aspire mini laptop that I owned, and even on a Sony Vaio. Multiple laptops my parents owned ran Windows Vista (terrible OS), before upgrading to Windows 7.

Two days ago, Windows 10 was discontinued. It’s hard to believe that this article went live on the release of Pokémon Legends Z-A, and I may be going to GameStop within twelve hours to pick up the Nintendo Switch 2 edition because that’s what I want.

If you used Windows 10 any time in the past ten years, what were your favorite memories with the operating system?

  1. Great read! It really does feel like the end of an era. Windows 10 was a rock-solid OS for so many years. I remember making the jump from Windows 7 and being so impressed with the updates. It’s wild to think about how many hours we all spent on it, especially going through high school / college & gaming. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

  2. Hey Drill!

You may recall my balking about having to finally give up Vista for Windows Ten maybe five years ago, when I left Pacific Tech. How sick the Geek Squad became when I kept coming in and demanding they find solutions woes because I had had always maintained my Best Buy Extended Warranty Plan even though the annual fees were ridiculous, topping at $425. Then there was the lawsuit, which was settled to my advantage out of court.

With that money I was able to purchase a 2006 Toyota Matrix and some IKEA furniture. Beyond then I was fortunate to have student students who were well versed in Fortran, Linex, z/OS, OpenVMS who were willing to keep my Dell M17 hobbled together.

But I digress, and you know how I miss my old Dell. I had her running on Windows 10 for a year or two before the massively modified caught fire (again) and I had to take it to balcony and through it in towards the pool. Unfortunately, it slam-bounced on the concrete edging before sinking to the bottom. The guy’s at the Geek Squad (who had repaired it when it was dunked before) said that the physical damage was abuse, and that they would not repair it under warranty.

You do realize that you are one of my most senior subscribers. I really do appreciate that, but for so long I thought you were a mining supply company. Stay safe, and thanks for inspiring another torn corner post.
