Indie game developers and players are eager to get back on itch.io after it was hacked overnight on July 8, 2025. Users were unable to sign on to the site in the early morning hours of that day Eastern Daylight Time. Itch Corp confirmed on social media that the cause of the outage was the result of a large denial of service attack.
As of now, the site is back up and running after it was knocked offline for eight hours overnight on July 7-8, 2025. Hackers reportedly flooded the site with tens of thousands of access requests, overwhelming the itch.io servers and causing them to crash. Most hackers who perpetrate these attacks do not usually have any financial gain.
According to the site Down for Everyone or Just Me, more than 2,600 users reported site issues. Itch does not have a DownDetector page, unlike most other services, but it is a reliable source for users wishing to know about the current status of the site.
Last month on June 7, 2025, the site went down for five hours for unknown reasons, with over 5,500 reports of outages. Itch.io did not respond to Drillimation’s request for comment on the cause of the outage.
