How I Made Drillimation With Old Technology

One value of Drillimation’s philosophy is making old technology cool again. Even some of the things I use to make the games are years old. When it comes to creating games with cutting-edge technology, that gets expensive. Sometimes, it’s easier to make a smaller game with older technology. It could even break down with glitches when it gets to market if they haven’t had years of experience or getting used by millions of players.

When you think of old technology, it becomes cheaper to make and has already proven to work. Independent developers can think sideways by reusing old tech and still make games fun. In the video game industry, nobody talks about competing by creating games with the best graphics. We talk about who has the best ideas for gameplay. Even a 2D game like my own with graphics that no one cares about anymore can win Game of the Year at the Game Awards.

A lot of players haven’t experimented with making retro-style danmaku games, so I stepped in and proved the genre can even have 1980s graphics. That’s what I did with the Chuhou Joutai trilogy and Touhou Project NES Demakes. When I created these games, I wanted to simplify the way people play danmaku games as they were already getting too complicated for newbies to play.

Even if my games are forgotten, there will be a day when players want to play them again, as my titles are filled with the essence of making danmaku games fun. But in life, it can strengthen one’s reflexes.

  1. Even though I’m not a gamer, I highly admire what you’re doing. Using older technology to create new projects is an awesome thing to do in this ‘throw it away’ world. I wish you fulfillment and success in all areas of your life ✨
