The Backstories of Kiyomi Tatariya and Asta Nattendottir, Further Explained

Kiyomi Tatariya and Asta Nattendottir are two characters and the bosses of the third and fourth stages in Touhou Chouhatsuyou ~ Burgeoning Tresses of Longevity. Their hairstyles were unaffected by the scent and remain at their regular length. They also live in Dragon’s Tower where the Kanbe family also lives. They aren’t related by blood, but why are they here?

Both these characters once lived on their own before they landed in the youkai-born-owned tower, being brought in to serve a few roles. Ichimatsu and Yuugiku Kanbe’s daughter discovered these two while walking around the outskirts of the newly established Kanawa City, which was home to the tower. Eventually, the couple adopted these two and lived out the rest of their lives in the city.

Kiyomi’s Backstory

Kiyomi Tatariya was a wakemitama who managed to become a concert conductor at the young age of four. She tended to be very shy and fearful around her family as she aged. Isolating herself served as a way to confront her fears of her family. Because of this, she was rarely seen in public, preferring to spend most of her time alone in abandoned buildings. Around the time she became a conductor, she gained the ability to curse any person with her gaze. It’s a mystery how she gained the ability.

One day, while walking around the western outskirts of Kanawa, she bumped into a girl with very long hair, who just so happened to be Mabayu Kanbe. Kiyomi followed her into Kanawa and eventually found herself at her home in Dragon’s Tower. From there, Kiyomi met her father Ichimatsu, who requested help in maintaining the tower. She agreed, and the Kanbe family ultimately hired her with the tower becoming her new home. She was shocked to even learn everyone in the Kanbe family were all the same ethnicity as Kiyomi – they too were members of the Wakemitama tribe.

As she lived with the Kanbe family, she warned them of her ability to curse anyone with their gaze, including humanoids and youkai-borns. Every night, she would gaze out of the tower as she slept to fend off any intruders who tried to illegally enter Dragon’s Tower.

Asta’s Backstory

Asta Nattendottir was a humanoid who served in a defensive role for her own family. She was a happy, cheerful girl who grew a fondness for small dogs that she called her “inugami”. When she was just starting the second decade of her life, things ended up changing for her on a dramatic scale.

When she was just ten, both her parents developed ALS (or Lou Gehrig’s disease), and her life instantly changed. Within two years, they were both gone. The only one that was left in her family was her inugami. With nobody else to defend, Asta ultimately left to set out on a life of her own. She eventually found a place on the map that was named Kanawa and set out for the city. Upon her arrival, she was greeted by Mabayu Kanbe, who happened to be the youkai-born daughter of a Japanese father and Chinese mother who ran a tower.

Ichimatsu and Yuugiku Kanbe learned that she could serve in a defensive role for the tower. She was appointed the gatekeeper to the tower and ultimately became their adoptive daughter until she reached adulthood. During her time, she grew fond of where she lived, and continued living in Kanawa until her death.
