Studio Emiko Still Locked Out of Discord, New FBI Report Reveals Cybercrime Damages in 2024 Reached All-Time High Compared to 2023

Eleven days have passed since the Discord account of Studio Emiko was hacked. No word has been found on when she will return, but a recent FBI report reveals that cybercriminals caused over $9.5 trillion in damages to individuals and businesses worldwide in 2024. In the United States alone, over $16 billion was lost to cybercrime. This was an increase from $8 trillion globally and $12.5 billion domestically in 2023.

Investment fraud and business email compromise scenes were major contributors in 2023. But that’s not all – the top three cybercrimes in 2024 were phishing, extortion, and personal data breaches. Ransomware attacks still pose a significant threat to cyber infrastructure.

Discord’s Terms of Service state that users assume full responsibility for the security of their accounts. While cyberattack methods have become more and more sophisticated in recent years, a common method for hackers to break into accounts is stealing passwords, either locally or from data breaches. All security in the world means nothing, and if a user leaves a password lying around on sticky notes or other easily accessible locations, that could make them an easy target for hacking. Users should be sure that passwords are secure, original, and stored in secure locations. One highly recommended method is changing passwords often, such as every six months.

As cybercrime around the world continues to evolve and grow, the amount of damage cybercriminals are causing is projected to continue growing by 15% annually, and according to Cybersecurity Ventures, cybercriminals will likely cause over $10.5 trillion in global damages by the end of this year.
