Why Living With a Dog is More Fun, But More Challenging

For most of my life, I have felt that living with a dog promotes companionship. This was especially true when we needed a little critter to turn to during the stressful lockdowns of the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, my first doggy was my favorite. Owning a smaller dog such as a Yorkshire Terrier sure made my life easier. There are several reasons for this: they’re more portable, require less exercise, smaller food budgets, and easier to groom. In fact, they’re also cuter than their larger counterparts.

For a time, only this little guy’s left ear would stand up. As of today, it has since converted into a standard floppy ear.

In the autumn of 2023, my brother adopted a dog of his own after being stuck in his lonesome when he moved to Orlando three years prior. While owning a dog is sure fun, they also come with their fair share of challenges because they irritate you a lot. Firstly, there’s the budget. You have to keep feeding them regularly, make sure their coat is clean, give them toys to entertain them, and maintain their health. Also, let’s not get into the time to potty train them because if you leave them alone all day, they are bound to have one or two accidents.

What about travel? Good luck trying to get them across international borders as there’s all sorts of customs paperwork you have to fill out.

  1. I loved your thoughtful insights on life with a dog—it’s both heartwarming and relatable, even for someone like me who doesn’t have pets! The way you described the playful challenges alongside the unconditional joy really paints such a vivid picture. It’s a great reminder of how much connection and spontaneity animals bring to our lives.

  2. There sure is a lot of responsibilities that come along with owning a dog. In my younger years, I was quite an irresponsible pet owner. I loved my animals but they were often brought home on a wim. I have since become more responsible. I find the most challenging part, is the restriction we now have from travelling. Our dog doesn’t always mix well with other dogs. It is not like when we had smaller breeds that are more compact. Visiting family has definitely become more challenging. Although, I would not trade Sunny for any reason. She is the light of my life.

  3. Aww, your pet is adorable! Pets are lovely companions, but if you can’t fully commit to their care, it’s better to hold off on getting one. I learned this the hard way. I got a cat last year, but my schedule was so hectic—leaving early in the morning and coming back late at night—that the poor thing ended up feeling so sad and lonely.

Eventually, I had to rehome her, which was heartbreaking. Plus, she started eating my wallpaper out of boredom! 😂

Cats are definitely easier in some ways—they don’t need as much attention or potty training—but they still get lonely. By the time I got home, I was always too exhausted to play with or pet her. Honestly, I felt like a bad boyfriend. 😂
