Why It Costs So Much to Buy or Build a Computer for Game Development

Computers are essentially what’s necessary to get into software development. To me, they are the most expensive piece of equipment that I have invested on. When I built my current workstation that I’ve been using for the past four years, it was over $1,500 from a student loan I had during the autumn 2020 semester. Two years later, I purchased a new MacBook with roughly the same specs as my system, and it was a whopping $2,000. In fact, I was a little nervous and shocked because of how expensive it was.

What about the various accessories that I use on a daily basis? The things currently connected to the device are two monitors, with one of them being a touchscreen, a keyboard and mouse, two Xbox controllers, and a MIDI keyboard that I solely use to write music. While they did not cost the same amount of money that I needed to build my workstation, they are still an investment.

The next computer I build may be even more expensive. My motherboard, CPU, GPU, and whatever gadgets will all determine the price.
