Scam Warning: Users on Threads Being Tagged About Fake Terms of Service Violations

Drillimation Systems is issuing a warning to users on Threads and all of their followers about fake quote threads that claim a user had violated Meta’s Terms of Service, and even threatening suspension if a user does not confirm their identity. They started showing up on Sunday.

Meta is investigating the origin of these fake warnings and as of this writing there is no source or motive, but these scams are designed to trick users into giving out personal information or even install malware on a user’s device. That personal information could be used by cybercriminals to commit malicious activity or even drain credit cards, which in turn could fund global drug cartels or even terrorist organizations and greatly hurt global economies.

This has gotten the Prophet Driller of Drillimation Systems very nervous as the Drillimation Systems Threads account has committed no suspicious activity. These scam threads have reportedly been seen all over the world and do not seem to target any specific age or gender.

Social media scams are an extremely widespread form of malware. This often happens if an account is hacked or compromised. It is very important to check Meta’s blog or local news about any changes to their Terms of Service or policies. Users are advised not to click on any link in the thread and report it as Scam or Fraud. Threads has only been around for over a year and this is the first scam that we have seen on the platform.

  1. Thanks for this! Me and my wife are pretty good at phishing… the other day she got a spear-phishing attack that she almost fell for… these #@$& pukes always trying to poke and prod…

I found a great radio program, Kim Komando…always has a lot of up-to-date scams and in-general IT stuff…I like her.

Thx again for this heads-up! 😎
