Temperate Versus Tropical: Why You Don’t See Cold in the Latter

For me, I am a person living in a temperate climate. But two others, namely my brother, and Studio Emiko chairwoman Emiko Hosokawa, live in tropical climates. Living in a temperate climate allows you to explore different climatic landscapes, but depending on where one is situated, you have one thing in common: cold.

As a video game developer who has created games set in different seasons, you have to create your graphics to suit that climate. So does the music for the environment. For me, I like exploring different climatic landscapes, but the temperature is a whole another story.

In 2020, after my brother became fed up with having to deal with the cold weather in Erie, Pennsylvania (the 2019-20 season lasted from early November to early May). He moved down to Orlando, Florida. There’s a reason why Disney World is based there. During the conceptual phase, The Walt Disney Company needed an East Coast version of Disneyland, and one that was not set in the cold.

When you travel from temperate to tropical, it feels like you’re traveling to the Southern Hemisphere. That’s because tropical settings are set in lower latitude where it gets most of the sunlight. In the differences between the temperatures of the two, temperate goes from cold to warm as the first half of the year progresses. In tropical climates, the summers are year-round. But at the polar ends, the winters are year-round.

To me, I like exploring the snowy settings in the winter, but not when I have to drive through it or when winter extends outside its range from November to February.

  1. I am in Illinois, near Chicago. Our weather is like Pennsylvania’s, where your brother used to live. Good for him regarding his move to Florida. If I move, I have considered the southwestern United States, as in Arizona or New Mexico. As a retired person, I’m also considering Mexico, Portugal, and Spain (southwest coast). However, being a “widow riding solo”, I’m kind of scared to move out of the US, but would love to use my Spanish language abilities. I love talking to the Hispanic members in my community! I also am a huge music lover and like the Mexican band Frontera as well as many, many others. My son loves r&b, rap, and Japanese chill hop. He’s been listening to Japanese music since he was very young. He’s 27 now! He used to sing songs in Japanese sounding very accurate but only partially understanding all of the words. How do you choose music for your games? I’m just so curious about almost everything in life! 🌷⭐️💫🎮
