How the Governments of Eastern and Western Kozan Worked During the Edo Period

In the pre-Meiji Gensokyo continent in the Drillimation Danmaku Universe, there were multiple kingdoms governing the continent before they all unified during the Meiji Restoration. There were two dominant powers on the continent in the 18th and 19th centuries: the Federal Kingdom of Eastern Kozan and the Democratic Kingdom of Western Kozan. To compare the two:

Both of them are vested in a monarchy who rules for life until death, resignation, or removal as a result of impeachment.

Power in the Federal Kingdom of Eastern Gensokyo

Executive power is vested in the monarchy and prime minister. The monarch is chosen from a line of succession among descendants of the kingdom’s founder, Marisa Kirisame. The Prime Minister is considered the de facto head of state while the monarch is ceremonial. The monarch is allowed to introduce bills but cannot vote on them. The constitution of the Federal Kingdom of Gensokyo does not allow any member of the royal family to affiliate themselves with any political party.

The legislative representatives are elected into the Senate and House of Representatives, which form Kozan’s parliament and bicameral legislature. Senators are elected for six-year terms while representatives are elected to two-year terms.

Power in the Democratic Kingdom of Western Gensokyo

Executive power is vested in the monarchy and prime minister. The monarch, which is considered the head of state, is chosen by a line of succession among descendants of the kingdom’s founder, Yukari Yakumo. The monarch is also responsible for appointing the prime minister, confirmed by its legislature.

Direct elections only occur for the local level to elect members of the National Congress, serving five-year terms.
