Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess is the third installment of the Chuhou Joutai series, and the eighth Drillimation game. How on earth was Drillimation able to produce eight danmaku games over the span of a few years? I have a lot of fun making these games.
I was a person who grew up with video games, though my parents were particularly strict on how many hours I could spend each day. Nowadays, people of all ages play games. I decided to become a developer as a result. After spending four years working on those types of games, I was ready to move on, and create a game of a new genre. Touhou Kourinden will be the end result. A way to tell the story of how Kozan’s legend unfolded.
My aim is to create a Touhou Project fangame that people of any age can play. Most of the other games are the violent type – there aren’t very many Touhou Project fangames on consoles that everyone can enjoy. I wanted to come up with a game intended for a parent to share with a child.
From the beginning, I’ve always wanted to make a game of my own but lacked the resources to do so. After seeing the success of the indie boom with games like Minecraft and Touhou Project, I realized it was possible to create a game all by yourself. After spending four years working on the Chuhou Joutai trilogy, I had the experience of creating a game with a more complex system. RPGs are one of the toughest genres of games to create thanks to their complex systems that require a lot of planning to get right.
During the development of the trilogy, I played other games including RPGs as well including Undertale, Pokémon, Super Mario Maker, Dragon Quest, among others.
I think working with Whitethorn Digital on Kourinden will help speed up development. The game is 20% complete with the first of six acts finished, and I intend on getting the game’s second act done by the end of this year. The first entire act will be free for anyone to download, play, and share in the future. We aim to get it released by the end of this year or early next year, depending on how things go.
I have completed my goal of having three fully completed games on Steam. I ended up getting a small cult following. Views on this website peaked in the summer of 2020 when Chuhou Joutai 1 released. And yet I still managed to gain popularity in the Japanese market. The Drillimation Danmaku Universe may remain a danmaku shooter game franchise, but may still explore other genres, including RPGs and fighters.
I am hoping to get Kourinden into its beta by the end of 2023 and fully released in the summer of 2024.
