For many developers, their local surroundings don’t provide much inspiration. But places far away do. You have a much greater chance of success if you live in a country with a lot of land spanning some or all of the continent (think the US, Canada, Australia, China, etc.). Sometimes, that inspiration is overseas.
Video games are audiovisual works, and anything such would need graphics in order to display the environment. What type of transportation would you need to get to your research locations?
If it’s a short distance away, you’ll need a bike. Across the entire county or state would need a bus or car. An interstate trip would need a car or train. But what if you need to go across the entire country? You could do it by car but an airplane is much faster.
Let’s say you’re traveling from Boston, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California. The table below shows the time between both locations:
| Transportation method | Time |
|---|---|
| Foot | 47 days (roughly 7 weeks) |
| Bike | 13 days (roughly 2 weeks) |
| Bus | 3 days and 8 hours |
| Train | 3 days and 7 hours |
| Car | 1 day and 22 hours |
| Airplane | 6 hours and 38 minutes (westbound) 5 hours and 40 minutes (eastbound) |
Below is another example for if you are traveling from Buffalo, New York to Orlando, Florida.
| Transportation method | Time |
|---|---|
| Foot | 18 days (roughly 2 and a half weeks) |
| Bike | 5 and a half days |
| Bus | 1 day and 9 hours |
| Train | 1 day and 22 hours |
| Car | 17 hours and 15 minutes |
| Airplane | 2 hours and 50 minutes (southbound) 2 hours and 40 minutes (northbound) |
While it may be possible in some locations, going overseas by foot, bike, bus, train, or car would be impossible, with plane being your only method. In fact, the longest non-stop flight in the world is going from New York to Singapore, and the flight itself lasts nearly 19 hours.

You could take a tour by using Google Maps, too, but it is not that fun.

This is good information. I would typically drive, if a trip is possible. However, I typically will browse stuff for inspiration online. Too many places I can’t see. You could always take photos from others and utilize them. Many are resources with cc0 licenses. I am a solo indy dev with practically nothing released due to the struggle of game development. Have you ever had a project, without a backup, crash and become unrecoverable after several months of work?
Talk about devastating. Lol

Did anyone say rooooooooooooad trip!?! Love taking long journey and seeing what’s out there in our world. That’s of course if there’s plenty of time for such an activity. And by time I meant 2-3 weeks of driving. I think I got that from my dad. Standing between his legs when I was little, hands on the wheel or next to him while traveling. It gives me a sense of freedom. Till this day!
