Have you developed a game without taking courses in game development? If so, you’re mostly self taught.
Pretty much every Drillimation game including each new mechanic is the result of extensive research. Sure, the Prophet did take some courses during his school days, but the name of this article is to explain the prevalence of self-teaching in the field of game development.
For every game one can make, there’s all sorts of things you can learn from it. From what the Prophet’s learned from each game he’s made:
- Chuhou Joutai: Learned the basic fundamentals of game development, including adding an introduction, title screen, main menu, setup menu, options, save feature, high score screen, and of course, the basics of the danmaku genre.
- Touhou 1: The Highly Responsive to Prayers NES Demake: Learned how to make a breakout-style game, and also implemented lives.
- Chuhou Joutai 2: Paraided!: Learned how to add a shop feature.
- Touhou 3: The Phantasmagoria of Dimensional Dreams NES Demake: Learned how to make a versus-style game.
- Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria: Learned how to make a role-playing game.
