Drillimation Systems today releases the beta for Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest on itch.io. The game is a collaboration between Studio Emiko who wrote the story and screenplay, and E. Enthusiasm, who provided most of the game’s sprites. It will also be the first game in the dedicated Emiverse by Studio Emiko.

Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest is a Touhou Project fangame that centers on four characters who must seek the source of a mysterious concert draining Gensokyo’s audience and causing an endless thunderstorm. The game is intentionally developed in the style of a Super Nintendo game featuring 16-bit graphics and audio.

Work on the game began in late February 2023 during the second half of Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria‘s development, and the soundtrack for the game was released as a fangame album on Drillimation’s Bandcamp in May of that year. Development of its game adaptation formally began in July and was completed in November. Directed by a 16-year-old game design prodigy based in Vietnam, Touhou Meijinka smashed cultural and gender barriers, being the first game produced by Drillimation to be directed by a woman and of non-American origin. It is also the first to not be directed by Susumu Takajima, who directed every game produced by Drillimation from its debut title up until this one.

“This has been one of the most fun projects I ever worked on, but one of the most challenging,” Drillimation Systems CEO and Executive Producer Susumu Takajima said in an October YouTube video. The Director’s busy academic and personal schedule contributed to the project’s difficulty.

Touhou Meijinka will feature four playable characters, six stages plus a post-game stage, four difficulty levels with different spell cards, and controller support.
Touhou Meijinka will be launching on December 8, 2023, on both itch.io and Steam. The soundtrack is available on Bandcamp and the game is open source, with the source code available on GitHub.
