Emiko Hosokawa’s Philanthropic Causes – Why an Ambitious Goal Never Made it to Reality

Studio Emiko is currently working on Touhou Meijinka ~ Song of Divine Tempest with Drillimation Systems. Emiko Hosokawa’s goal, as with Drillimation, is creating experiences that would encompass a worldwide audience. Studio Emiko wanted to take a different approach for her own projects that were failed prototypes and ultimately repurposed for other Drillimation games, including Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess and Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria.

Studio Emiko’s games, like Drillimation’s, would be commercial and for-profit projects. A significant portion of that revenue would be donated to charities, and that’s what Studio Emiko wanted to do to support any type of cause. It never became a reality.

Team Shanghai Alice never defined any policies regarding charitable uses for Touhou Project fanworks, including games. Studio Emiko attempted to secure a license to that with no success. Though some exceptions are made, Team Shanghai Alice’s content policies doesn’t generally allow monetization of Touhou Project fanworks.

According to YouTuber CreepyNinja, the developers behind Servants of Harvest Wish have done a fundraiser before. This led to users speculating that it would be find as long as the developers don’t solicit the sales of fanworks as part of charitable activity. Their fundraiser involved handing out wall scrolls featuring one of the game’s characters as a free reward for participants of their campaign.

Studio Emiko’s goals have never become reality because several projects by the studio were failed prototypes. It should be noted that the majority of video game projects fail before they get past the prototyping phase. Whenever a video game project fails, every hour of effort and dollar invested into the project becomes a loss.
