Why the Minecraft URL is Minecraft.net

Minecraft.net, by all means, is the URL for the official website of Minecraft since its inception. A lot of players have been wondering why Minecraft doesn’t use the Minecraft.com URL.

First of all, when the website for the Minecraft we know today was created by Notch back in 2009, he couldn’t use the Minecraft.com domain because an Australian company named MineCraft Consulting already had the Minecraft.com domain name. When Notch’s Minecraft exploded in popularity, many players would type in Minecraft.com instead of Minecraft.net, causing not only a lot of confusion but bandwidth usage over at MineCraft Consulting’s servers.

It took several years before Microsoft could wrestle the Minecraft.com domain name away from MineCraft Consulting. The Minecraft.com domain actually existed before the game existed, as early as 2003, and the Minecraft name was first coined in 2001.
