Last month, on October 7, 2022, Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess was officially released on Steam. It’s already getting lauded for being one of our best games. The last installment must always have an ultimate feel if you make a trilogy of games. Even after a month after its release, critics are still requesting review codes. They’re using it to spread the word of the game, despite a small marketing budget.
Even though the release of that game marked the end of an era for us, we can always look back during the first game’s conceptualization. The controversial 2014 film The Interview was a major inspiration for the game’s plot. The film focused on two men who are ordered to assassinate a leader. We decided to use that film’s concept into the game. We needed to create a game that could appeal to a wide audience, so shonen and shojo manga tropes ended up being mixed together.
Susumu Takajima was based on the typical shonen manga protagonist, while Kagami Ochiai is modeled after costumed magical girls and idols. Chuhou Joutai 1‘s plot can be considered a mutation of the buddy genre. While most buddy films star men who are paired up on an adventure or quest, Chuhou Joutai has a boy and a girl paired up.
Even though it may be a while before you could see another installment, we won’t give up on the Chuhou Joutai franchise.
