If You Can’t Comment on Blog Posts

Problem: You are unable to post comments on blog posts or you receive an error when you try to do so.

Solution

Before you try any of the solutions below, make sure you are signed into a WordPress account, which is required in order to comment. If you do not have one, you can create an account free of charge.

If you’re already signed in but still can’t comment, try the following steps:

  • Perform a force refresh in your browser. This ignores any cached copies of the article you are trying to comment on. The command for this action varies depending on your browser. Below are a few examples for a few of the most popular browsers:
    • Chrome on Windows: Ctrl + F5
    • Chrome on Mac: Command + Shift + R
    • Firefox on Windows: Ctrl + F5
    • Firefox on Mac: Command + Shift + R
    • Safari: Command + Option + R
    • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + F5
  • Remember that our site makes use of cookies to ensure you get the best experience. They remember your last visit and any pertinent data you input into the site such as through comments and on our forms. Cookies can sometimes load incorrectly or get corrupted, resulting in issues commenting. Deleting them will usually resolve the issue, but do note that you will be signed out and need to log in again. To access your cookies, you will need to perform the following command, which again varies depending on your browser. Below are a few examples for a few of the most popular browsers:
    • Chrome on Windows: Ctrl + Shift + Delete
    • Chrome on Mac: Command + Shift + Delete
    • Firefox on Windows: Ctrl + Shift + Delete
    • Firefox on Mac: Command + Shift + Delete
    • Safari: Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data
    • Microsoft Edge: Command + Shift + Delete
  • Try posting the comment from a different browser. Browsers can sometimes send invalid HTTP headers to websites.
  • Browser extensions can sometimes interfere with the site’s operations. Deactivate any extensions that could cause problems and try again. To do this:
    • In Chrome: Settings > More Tools > Extensions > Toggle off all extensions
    • In Firefox: Settings > Add-ons and Themes > Toggle off all extensions
    • In Microsoft Edge: Settings > Extensions > Toggle off all extensions
    • In Safari: Safari > Preferences > Extensions > Toggle off all extensions
  • If you tried any of the above and still can’t comment, reinstalling your browser may help.
  • Corruptions, mismatches, and outdated data between your system’s DNS cache and the WordPress web server can cause the issue. Flushing the cache will relink the DNS from your system to the WordPress web server. To flush it:
    • In Microsoft Windows:
      1. Type ‘cmd’ into the Windows search box.
      2. Right click the Command Prompt entry in the menu and select Open as Administrator. If you’re asked for an administrator password, enter the password.
      3. Type ‘ipconfig /flushdns’ and hit Enter.
      4. Try commenting again.
    • In Mac OS:
      1. Open Terminal.
      2. Type ‘dscacheutil -flushcache’ and hit Enter.
      3. Try commenting again.
  • If none of the above worked, it may be worthwhile to restart your system, which flushes all memories and cached data in memory.
  • Try commenting on a different device. If you’re able to comment, then the other device may have issues.
  • Check the status of the WordPress servers and make sure they are not experiencing issues. Automattic makes no guarantee that the WordPress servers will be up and running 100% of the time, and does not assume responsibility in the rare event that the servers are down. If that’s the case, there’s nothing you can do except wait. The servers may have been overloaded, down or unreachable because of a network issue, or the operators planned a scheduled maintenance where the servers needed to be shut down.
