Error: PC Hangs and Produces a Blank Screen While Playing Chuhou Joutai

Problem: When playing Chuhou Joutai or another Drillimation game on a dual or multiple monitor setup, your screens blank and become unresponsive, but the audio still runs fine.

Solution

This problem can have multiple possible causes, including:

  • Unsupported or defective graphics cards
  • Outdated graphics card drivers
  • Poor graphics card adaptors or power supplies
  • You have an external monitor connected to your motherboard’s on-board graphics instead of a dedicated GPU
  • Corrupted Visual C++ installation
  • Corrupted .NET installation

In the Event Viewer, Event ID 6008 is logged into the system if the system shuts down unexpectedly while playing Chuhou Joutai or another Drillimation game. This problem most commonly occurs if your Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) or graphics card crashes as a result of excessive heat, faulty power supply or AC adaptor, outdated drivers, or incompatible in-game settings. If your computer is shutting down randomly and producing a blank screen, and you believe Chuhou Joutai or another Drillimation game is causing it, follow these steps.

First Steps

  1. A quick fix for this problem is, and this is a complex keyboard combination, pushing Ctrl+Shift+Windows Key+B. You should hear a “beep” and this will reset your GPU, but do note that this will close the game and you may lose any unsaved data.
  2. If the key combination doesn’t work, shut down your computer by pushing and holding the power button on your PC for ten seconds. Wait a few seconds, and then turn your PC back on. If your PC has a reset button, push it. You will lose all unsaved data.
  3. If the issue persists, repeat step two and then unplug all accessories from your computer with the exception of an AC power adaptor. If you’re using a desktop, make sure only a keyboard, mouse, and display are connected. You could have an issue with one or more of these accessories that could be producing the aforementioned issue.
  4. If the issue persists, try reinstalling the game. Do note that reinstalling the game will delete all of your save data, so make sure you back it up before doing so. To do this, go to the game under Local App Data (access it with %localappdata% in search).
  5. Make sure your graphics card driver is up to date. Outdated drivers will not work correctly with our games. Go to the website of your manufacturer and install the most recent driver versions. We have the links to the driver downloads below:
  6. Corrupted Windows user profiles can cause issues with our games. Try creating a new Windows user and play the game from there.
  7. Make sure the monitor is plugged into your graphics card video-out port and not your motherboard’s video-out port.
  8. Defective adaptor cables or power supplies can cause issues. Try switching the current cable with a new one.
  9. If none of the previous two steps work, consider replacing your graphics card with a new one. Make sure you install the correct drivers to accompany the new hardware.
  10. Consider updating your Windows Visual C++ and .NET components. For more info, click here.
  11. If the issue persists, repeat step two again. Log into Windows like usual, and open Settings. From there, go to Update & Security, and click Recovery. Click Restart now to restart your PC and from there, the Advanced Startup menu will appear once your PC restarts. Once there, click Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, and click Startup Repair. Follow the prompts that follow.
    • If Startup Repair found errors and repaired them, restart your PC and try playing the game again. If the issue returns following this or Startup Repair couldn’t fix the problem, then you may need to reinstall Windows.
  12. If none of the above worked, or the issue has been occurring for more than a month, then you may need to perform an in-place upgrade. This essentially reinstalls Windows without removing your applications or files. This article by the Windows Club has instructions on how to do this. Do note that performing an in-place upgrade will erase any Windows Updates installed to your machine, so you will need to reinstall them after performing this method.

If your CPU or GPU is causing this problem

If you believe this problem is being caused by your CPU or GPU, we have a few recommendations to see if you can remedy this issue:

  1. Make sure that all other applications are closed. Also, never run any CPU or GPU-intensive programs while playing the game. Some programs that commonly run in the background include third-party virus scanners and screensavers.
  2. Disable graphical effects such as Windows Aero and/or taskbar transparency.
  3. We recommend you place your system in a cool environment. If you’re using a laptop, use a cooling pad.
  4. Try playing the game in windowed mode and in low-res mode.
  5. If you’re using a desktop, make sure all of the components in the computer are clean, as dust collecting can also cause this issue.

Expand the amount of Committed Memory on Your System

This problem can also occur if the amount of committed memory on your system exceeds an allowed limit. Committed memory is calculated by the amount of RAM your have on your system plus a page file that is automatically generated. The Page file is typically stored on your hard drive, and uses your system’s free space as virtual memory which can expand over time. You can remedy this problem by moving the page file to an external drive. To do this:

  1. If you don’t have an additional hard drive, you may purchase one from any vendor.
  2. Install the hard drive into your system. This process varies depending on the system you are using. Check your motherboard’s manual or the manufacturer’s website for information on how to install a hard drive.
  3. Turn your system on and log in. After you do so, right click on the Start button and click Disk Management.
  4. Your new hard drive should appear as an Unallocated drive. Right click on it and select New Simple Volume. Follow the prompts in the wizard that appears. After you do so, we recommend restarting your system so the changes can take effect.
  5. Open Advanced System Settings in Control Panel. Click Settings under Performance. When the Performance Options window appears, go into Virtual Memory and click Change.
  6. Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”. On the drive where Windows is installed, change the setting to No paging file. On the new hard drive, choose Custom size, and set the Initial and Maximum size to a desired number (we recommend keeping them the same) as allowed by the new hard drive. You will need to restart your system again after confirming so the changes can take effect.

If you still need help, contact your system manufacturer or Drillimation Systems.

Recommended Tips

  • Make sure you are playing the latest version of the game. Bugs can also cause this issue.
  • Uninstall any bloatware installed on your machine.
  • Scan your computer for viruses to ensure no malicious programs are interfering with your computer’s resources. If you don’t have anti-virus software installed on your machine, you can download and install Microsoft Security Essentials for free here.
  • If you’re playing on Linux, disable compositing/desktop effects. When disabled, all window managers give similar performance without the need for a lightweight one.
  • Install all available system and driver updates until your machine reports it is up-to-date. If you recently updated your graphics card or driver, the game may lag a little as it needs to get used to the new system.

Diagnosing this problem can be difficult. If you need further help, consider taking your system to a qualified service technician.*
